Solving a Jaw Ache

There are many common causes of jaw ache which are usually identified with medical problems of different categories. Varied as they are, these problems can be categorized into two i.e. primary and secondary problems. The primary categories involve the conditions that directly affect the jaw. This type can be treated by a dentist or a nose, ears, and throat doctor. The secondary category on the other hand, usually involves the conditions that affect the other body parts. This type makes the pain to easily migrate towards the chin. However, such a situation may prove to be very difficult to resolve and thus may require the expertise of the other medical specialists.

Jaw Ache Causes

This article is only going to focus on some of the most common jaw pain causes that are found under the first category i.e. primary category. They include dental problems, trauma, dry socket, bone spurs, sinus infections, necrosis, and arthritis.

Jaw Ache--Trauma

Trauma usually arises as a result of a broken jaw. Direct heating or accidents on the facial bone are the most common culprits that are known to this. In addition, excessive grinding of the teeth known as bruxism can also cause such trauma.

Jaw Ache—Dental Problems

Damaged teeth, cavities, oral surgeries, teeth extractions, and also fillings and severe infections of the gum can sometimes cause severe pain to the jaw.

Jaw Ache--Bone Spurs

Bone spurs are also referred to as bony out growths.  They are most common among the adults. The projection of the impacted wisdom teeth may cause a hurting sensation to happen to this joint.

Jaw Ache—Arthritis

The mandibular joints are the specific areas that are usually attacked by arthritis. In relation to this, the temporomandibular jaw pain (TMJ jaw pain) is also caused by the chronic inflammation of this bone.

Jaw Ache--Sinus Infections

Similar to ear infections, sinus infections may also lead to jaw ache. This may be a result of the pressure that is present in the ears and also the sinus cavities which usually are connected to the facial joint.

Jaw Ache--Dry socket

If a blood clot happens to be dislodged during the process of tooth extraction, it will expose the nerves and bones underneath thus giving rise to jaw ache. There are usually referred pains, which may radiate from your socket, through the facial jaws.

Jaw Ache—Necrosis

Necrosis is characterized by the presence of swollen glands in the neck's region which in turn brings the hurting sensations in a person's facial joint.

Jaw Ache Remedies

There are times that the above conditions bring pain which is bearable.   If that happens to be the case, try to apply gentle pressure on any of the tender areas that is present in your jaw. Try to make sure that you avoid any possibility that may result in deep massages since the facial joints are severely delicate and thus can easily be affected. In between the gentle massages, you may be able to relieve the jaw pain by slowly opening and closing your mouth.  See if the present hurting sensations increase once the pressure is applied. Usually, this is a good hint for you to be able to stop with the gentle massages.

It is also advisable that you ensure that you give your facial joint enough rest. Excessively using it may be as a result of too much chewing or talking and must be avoided. For one, chewing gum is not usually healthy due to the fact that it induces constant jaw muscles movement thus making the related joints painful and swollen. Also, try to make sure that you often relax your shoulders and neck. This is because the strain in these parts of the body may cause an aching of the facial joints due to factors such as wrong posture when sleeping or working.

Seeing a medical practitioner like a dentist and an ENT doctor would be an ideal solution in trying to eradicate any of the above mentioned causes of jaw ache that you might be having. After requiring some X-rays and check- ups, the doctor will give you some advice on the most appropriate measures that you can follow. These measures could be in the form of surgeries, therapies, prescription drugs, or the use of dental fixtures.

Common TMJ Causes

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) is a disorder that can affect people of all ages. It is a condition that develops when the Temporomandibular joint (the joint that connects the person's jawbone to their skull) does not function properly. Some people are affected on both sides of their head, while others experience problems only on one side.

People who have TMJ can experience a variety of different symptoms. Some of the most common include having a stiff jaw, constant ear pain, or pain that will not easily go away without some type of treatment. Many have problems when they are eating since the pain is often generated when they are chewing their food. Others may have consistent and nagging headaches and they are usually hard to treat and identify. Although these are some of the more common symptoms, there are other symptoms that have been reported by patients that have this condition.

Unfortunately, there are many identifiable causes of TMJ and they include an improper bite, the clenching or grinding of teeth, various kinds of arthritis, injuries, mistakes made during a dental or medical procedure, the overuse of the jaw, and stress.  These TMJ causes can make TMJ disorder much more likely than what would normally be expected.

As stated above, an improper bite is one of the main causes of TMJ, since the improper bite makes the person place excess stress on their chewing muscles. The chewing muscles are adversely affected because the individual's teeth are lined up incorrectly when they are eating. When this condition is not treated, the individual can experience a certain amount of pain along with muscle spasms around their jaw area. These alignment problems can also lead to the person's jaw sliding out of its socket.

The clenching and grinding of teeth can also cause this condition, especially because the clinching and grinding can wear away the individual's cartilage. This means, when the cartilage is worn down, the bone is rubbed on bone and it creates the symptoms of TMJ. Unfortunately, grinding of teeth normally occurs when the individual is asleep and they may not be aware that they are doing it. Some of the symptoms of grinding can be identified, however, by jaw pain and ear pain that cannot be easily explained. Dentists can also identify problems with grinding and clenching by examining the teeth for wear and tear signs.

In addition to clenching and grinding, arthritis is also one of the causes of TMJ. Degenerative arthritis and osteoarthritis in the jaw area are two of the types of arthritis that can lead to TMJ, specifically because they can cause the jawbone to be displaced or dislocated. When the jawbone is dislocated, the individual can begin hearing popping, grating and clicking sounds and they can also experience a lot of pain when they open or close their mouth.  Rheumatoid arthritis is also a major issue for many.  Some of these individuals have a higher risk of not being able to move their jaw at all.

Some dental and other medical procedures can be responsible for causing TMJ. For instance, if a patient has to have a breathing tube inserted into their mouth, the jaw is often fixed in a certain position for an extended amount of time. When this occurs, the patient can suffer from the overuse of that jawbone and TMJ may be the result.

Stress is also listed as a common cause of TMJ. This is one of the contributing factors because it can make an individual involuntarily tighten their facial muscles and jaw muscles, while they are also clenching their teeth together.

Once the person has identified the cause of TMJ, they can search for a viable solution. This is a very important step because the treatment that the person receives is based on the actual cause of the problem. For example, if the cause of the problem is an improper bite, the dentist can evaluate the problem and they may recommend a mandibular position device. Normally, when the doctor prescribes this type of device, the patient is instructed to wear them for a short timeframe in order to relieve the symptoms and pain that they are experiencing. On the other hand, if TMJ is caused by stress, the physician will usually recommend relaxation as well as other stress relieving techniques.

Discover Preventive Ways to Reduce Gum Pain

When a patient visits a dentist with receding gum pain, they will have often run some tests on their gums and teeth. These tests may refer the patient to a specialist or surgery, depending on the diagnosis. There are many things that you can do to help when you have gum pain. Finding the right method to deal with the affliction is critical to ensuring relief.

Some people visit the dentist as often as they should, while others will put off the dental visit. Many dental professionals recommend that a patient see their dentist at least once a year for a cleaning and check-up. During these visits, the dental team can see some changes in your mouth. These changes can be viewed in the color, gums, or teeth. Further tests may be performed to see to what extent of damage may have occurred.

The first test might include the gum line and measure the amount of exposed teeth above the gum line. You can use these results to compare those previously made with other tests to determine if the gum has fallen even lower. If these tests can confirm the gum line has receded too far, a specialist can be called to help determine if this is the cause of the gum pain.

Teeth may also be a cause of gum pain. A cavity could cause extreme pain to the mouth and gums. A cavity can produce an extremely strong and consistent pain that can last awhile until treated. Dentists may be able to relieve the pain from teeth and solve the problem by extracting the offending tooth.

Tooth sensitivity is a theme with a lot of people. The sensitive nature of the tooth can be a result of cavity or glaze that was destroyed. Keeping the teeth cleaned regularly as well as with some special products for sensitive teeth may help with this problem.

Receding gums can be a problem for someone who wants to have some more tests on the mouth. These tests ensure that a person is healthy and is experiencing normal development.  A common practice of cleaning and check-ups can help to keep someone in good shape in regards to their dental care. If a cavity is left in too long or an old cavity is infected, more serious dental work may be necessary. Keeping an eye on the health of the offending area may help to reduce the amount of surgery or treatment that may otherwise be necessary.  Proper precautionary measures can greatly reduce the gum pain that is associated with bad teeth.

Home remedies are also helpful in combating infection. Yogurt is enriched with lactobacillus acidophilus in an excellent way. This friendly probiotic increases acidity in the mouth, making it difficult for the fungus to grow. Garlic has anti-fungal compounds called Allicin. Chewing clove garnish or food with roasted garlic is an excellent source of this Allicin. Thymol, contained in mouthwash, can also be helpful in treating gum pain.

If you see one of these symptoms, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. He or she will be able to provide suggestions for the treatment of gum pain.  This can help to prevent a number of issues such as Periodontitis (inflammation and infection of the ligaments that support the jaw and teeth). There are a number of things your dentist can do for treatment of this condition.  You may be advised to see an oral specialist that is capable of diagnosing the problem before further damage may occur.

In addition, you can get your dentist to do a deep cleaning, such as scaling or root planing. He or she may prescribe medications that contain antiseptic gel sobrisant chlorhixidini chip, antibiotics, enzymes, or oral antibiotics. Some antibiotics are used to fight the bacteria that contribute to the Periodontitis. In some severe cases, surgical procedures may be necessary. This may include the cornea flap surgery or bone tissue surgery. This is usually a last resort and is only used in extreme cases of inflammation or infection.

Preventive measures such as regular oral hygiene, antiseptic dental floss, mouthwash, stopping smoking, regular cleaning, and proper placement of the dental appliances can help to take care of an infection. Please note that it is not difficult to treat gum pain. Good habits and proper dental hygiene can help to stop gum pain before it even begins.  Take care of your teeth and gums because they are the only ones you will get!
