In his book, Big Fat Diver, entrepreneur Alex Mackey shares his uplifting story of heartbreak, weight loss and becoming a college diver at age 43.

Torrance, CA - February 24, 2016: Those who believe that it is too difficult or late in life to begin following their passions, should read the personal story of Alex Mackey, who at the age of 40, after suffering a great loss began his journey into competitive college diving.

The book entitled Big Fat Diver, begins as Alex and his wife Janice give birth to their son Seth, who was born prematurely and spends his first five months in the NICU. Due to an unexpected circumstance, Alex’s life takes a turn for the worse and he becomes obese as he eats his way through the stress.

“Writing Big Fat Diver has been therapeutic in a way,” explained Alex Mackey. “It helped me realize that no matter what struggles we go through, things are eventually resolved. What shapes our character, is how we react to those challenges. I can be a better person by recognizing the trial and making a conscious decision to turn it into a positive rather than complain and ask myself, why me?”

Despite feeling heartbroken, Alex decides to turn his life around. He embarks on an inspiring weight loss journey, enrolls in diving classes at the local community college and is able to lose over 70 pounds. Alex soon develops a passion for diving and at age 40, decides he wants to join a local diving team and potentially make it to the California State Diving Championships.

A week after joining the local college diving team, Alex tore both of his rotator cuffs during a bad dive and had to undergo two major surgeries. His dream of competitive diving was put on hold for over two years but once fully recovered, Alex sought out the noted American Olympic Diver, Greg Louganis and an unlikely friendship developed.

Greg Louganis became Alex’s personal diving coach and helped land him a spot on the El Camino College Diving Team in January 2016. Alex participated in his first dive meet on February 20, 2016, where he won both the 3-meter board and 1-meter board competitions. Alex is currently striving to make it to the College State Diving Championships in May 2016.

“Winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at my very first meet feels like it validates this whole journey into diving at such a late age,” explained Alex. “I hope this can be an inspiration to others that it is never too late to do something great.”

Big Fat Diver takes readers through the inspirational and heartwarming story of Alex Mackey as he transforms from a fat soccer dad to a competitive college diver. The book is currently available on Amazon for Kindle eBook and iBooks, where readers have access to exclusive video segments and diving fails.
